Kramer Bass
Vintage Kramer DMZ 4001 Electric Bass, circa 1980/81
The DMZ 4001 was first introduced by Kramer in 1979. It is the passive version of the DMZ 4000, featuring a DiMarzio pickup. This is what the DMZ stands for. A mini-switch remains, allowing the pickup to be wired in series or parallel. Also unchanged is the aluminum neck with maple inlays on the back and the Ebonol fingerboard, a design already used on the 450B and other models. The body is made of maple with walnut strips.
Based on the serial number A0169, we date this bass, according to Vintage Kramer, to 1980/1981.
The bass is in perfect working order and plays very well.

double bass
Fretted 5-string flat bass with bow and flight case: This flat bass was built in 2016 for use by the medieval band Waldkauz. The band also commissioned a bow from a bow maker and had a special flight case made. All of this is now for sale.
This exceptional flat bass is a true all-rounder. Impressive volume, full sound, compact body, bowable, fretted, flat, and easily transportable. The sound, like that of the legendary acoustic bass, is very similar to that of a double bass.
In developing this phenomenal flat bass, elements of the double bass, viola da gamba, mandola, electric bass, Spanish guitar, and the legendary acoustic bass were incorporated. With this flat bass, we have created a completely new instrument that not only boasts outstanding sound and playability but is also visually stunning.
The body has a maximum rib depth of 130 mm and a minimum of 95 mm. The top is significantly thicker than that of an acoustic guitar and features a pronounced transverse arch. For comparison, the top of a double bass is hollowed out like a violin. The thickness is determined by the strong string pressure, which results from the high bridge angle. Inside the body, as with a double bass, there is a soundpost.
In addition to the central soundhole, the top features two side-mounted sound slots, similar to the f-holes of a double bass, and is reinforced with contrasting springs.
The scale length is 864 mm, just like an acoustic bass. As with a viola da gamba, the neck is set in and the fingerboard is arched. It has 24 frets, including a zero fret. The zero fret means that the open strings sound the same as the fretted ones. While on a guitar these differences are subtle, the tone produced when bowing an unfretted string resting on bone is significantly different from that produced when the string rests on metal.
The headstock shape was chosen to provide the necessary stability, as it must withstand considerable tension. To keep the headstock as small as possible, the bass bow was fitted with electric bass tuners. With standard double bass tuners, it would have been twice as long.
For the specific requirements of this bass bow, we use Galli flatwound strings designed for electric basses. We installed a Schertler Stat B double bass pickup, which provides excellent amplification for bowed strings.
Like all our acoustic basses, this one is well-balanced in the hand, although its bowing design makes it slightly heavier. The bass bow is played standing up; this is the only way to maintain proper bow control. For experienced cellists or double bass players, the transition should be very quick, while guitarists and bassists will need a little patience to learn how to use the bow. The instrument's shape provides optimal conditions for this.
When played with the bow, the vibrations of the B and E strings resonate powerfully and forcefully. The A string sounds more precise and clear, while the D and G strings produce a sound that is both tender and powerful. The overall sound is more compact and tighter than that of its larger counterpart. When plucked, the gently building, rumbling tone of a double bass emerges with surprising quality and volume.
